What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year"s day is different from the American New Year because we don"t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year"s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians" New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don"t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake " Banh Chung"?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.
Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

New Year’s DayMy name is Eva. I am 13 years old. New Year is considered the most popular holiday in our family. At the beginning of December everybody has a festive mood. In the city the streets and shop windows are decorated with bright and motley garlands. A huge Christmas tree is put at the main square. We begin to prepare for the holiday. We buy Christmas-tree decorations, tinsel and gifts for each other at New Year’s fairs. At the end of December we put artificial Christmas tree and decorate it for the holiday.
I help my mother to prepare a festive table on December 31. New Year’s Eve always seems to me magical and unforgettable. At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them. Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.

Меня зовут Ева. Мне 13 лет. В нашей семье самым любимым праздником считается Новый год. В начале декабря у всех появляется праздничное настроение. В городе украшают улицы и витрины магазинов яркими, разноцветными гирляндами. А на главной площади устанавливают огромную ёлку. Мы начинаем готовиться к празднику. На новогодних ярмарках покупаем друг другу подарки, ёлочные игрушки и мишуру. В конце декабря дома устанавливаем искусственную ёлку и наряжаем её к празднику.
31 декабря я помогаю маме приготовить праздничный стол. Новогодняя ночь кажется мне всегда волшебной и незабываемой. В полночь, после выступления президента по телевизору, начинают бить куранты. Мы поздравляем друг друга с новым годом и загадываем желание, а потом обмениваемся подарками. Когда я была маленькая, то подарки находила под ёлкой и думала, что их мне принёс Дед Мороз. И хоть я уже взрослая, и не верю, что существует Дед Мороз, но в новогоднюю ночь хочется оказаться в сказке и поверить в чудо.
New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. People do not go to work on that day, and children do not go to school. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home among the members of the family.
People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.
At twelve o’clock in the night people can see the president on TV which addresses them with traditional words of congratulation. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner and enjoy it in a good company. Young people usually organize a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family.
The New Year of our life has begun. Everyone hopes it will really be happy.

Новый год- большой праздник в нашей стране. Всем он очень нравится. Он особенно любим маленькими детьми. Люди не ходят на работу в этот день, а дети не ходят в школу. Этот праздник считается семейным праздником. Он, как правило, отмечается у себя дома среди членов семьи.
Люди украшают свои дома и, как правило, ставят ель, которая стоит в углу комнаты. Эти ели очень красивы. Подарки обычно ставят под этими деревьями. Наши родители старательно готовятся к этому празднику. Они покупают новогоднюю елку, украшают её, покупают много вкусной еды и напитков.
В полночь люди могут видеть президента по телевизору, приветствующего их традиционными словами поздравления. В это время люди сидят за столами за праздничным ужином и наслаждаются им в хорошей компании. Молодые люди обычно организовуют танцы и много веселья. Некоторые из них выходят на улицы и площади. New Year Celebration in my family starts in the middle of December, when we begin to decorate our apartment and buy presents. We used to decorate an artificial tree, not a real one. Artificial tree stays longer with no cutting needed. We love to decorate the tree with toys, multicolored New Year baubles, sweets and mandarins, then we put a big beautiful star on the top, and little colored lights on the tree branches.
All apartment are adorned with glittering tinsels and with hand-made fir wreath on the door. All of us hide New Year presents under the tree, we love to put the present into special boxes or in wrapping paper, so we never know what is inside. Me and my mom always cook a very sophisticated dinner, including some elaborate dishes and a cake. Our relatives come to our place, and they also put their presents under the tree.
Just before midnight at 11.55 pm our president addresses all the people with his New Year speech. He reflects on the past year, and wishes everybody happiness in New Year. Then we raise a toast while the chiming clock on the Kremlin Tower is counting down the last seconds of the year. After that my grandfather wears a costume of Grandfather Frost, he plays funny games with us, we dance together, sing New Year songs. Late at night we start to open our presents. Magical time! I usually get many nice useful things from my family and relatives!
I love to spend this holiday with my family!

Я с мамой всегда готовлю очень изысканный ужин, который состоит из сложных блюд и торта. Наши родственники приходят к нам в гости, и тоже кладут свои подарки под елку.
Прямо перед полночью, в 23.55, наш президент обращается к народу с новогодним посланием. Он размышляет над уходящим годом, и желает всем счастья в новом году. Затем мы поднимаем бокалы под бой Кремлевских курантов, отсчитывающих последние секунды старого года. После этого мой дедушка одевает костюм Деда Мороза, играет с нами в веселые игры, мы танцуем и поем новогодние песни. Поздно ночью мы приступаем к распаковыванию подарков. Волшебное время! Я всегда получаю много хороших и полезных вещей от своей семьи и родственников!

My New Year
New Year I celebrate on the first of January. Every time I prepare for New Year. It`s pretty awful. I decorate New Year`s spruce with beautiful toys. Toys were makes our hands are especially beautiful.
My younger for other cut many paper snowflakes and we hand them in our flat together. I make or buy different presents for my friends and family and relatives. I`m fond of to be given presents.
Especially, I enjoy many sweets. Also I like to make holiday dishes. I can`t cook very well, but I always help my mum to cook a holiday dishes, that`s why I know how to cook certain thing`s. I can make "Herring under fur" and another salad called "The cheese paradise" and some other salads, for example. For this holiday we usually do several salads and sometimes we have a roasted chicken, too. Once more, I when my mother does my favourite cake "Miracle".
At 11:30 we seat at the table and talk. At the midnight we listen to the rings of the clock and to the congratulatory speech of the president. Then we drink the champagne and eat delicious dishes. Further we exchange presents which we make for each other. On the eve of morning we go to bed. New Year is the most magic holiday that`s why I like it.

New Year is one of the most beloved and cherished holidays of the year. Both adults and children like celebrating this day. In most countries it traditionally falls on the night of December 31 st . Thus, January 1 st marks the beginning of the new calendar year.
As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.
Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.
My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.
For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31 st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.
At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

В полночь мой отец наливает всем шампанское и произносит тост, приветствуя наступающий год. Мы также включаем телевизор, чтобы услышать куранты Кремля. В то же время я знаю, что где-то в Лондоне мой английский друг по переписке слушает бой часов знаменитого Биг-Бена.
